Federal Protectors (Protectores federales) - School Library Journal

These six volumes, highlighting the various federal agencies created to protect people and tackle crime, provide a basic introduction for young readers. Both facts and figures are included; for example, one role of U.S. Marshals is to locate missing children, the FBI was formed in 1908 to investigate crimes, and the FPS was created to guard federal buildings. Training and educational requirements are highlighted as well. The narratives are straightforward and informative, and photographs of agents in action accompany the text. All in all, these titles provide solid introductions to these important security providers. VERDICT The accessible narratives and interesting subject matter should entice young readers, and librarians should consider where there is a demand.

El Servicio Secreto (Secret Service) - Booklist

Designed for primary and middle-grade kids who are learning to read, this brightly illustrated book from the Federal Protectors series (6 titles) provides basic information about the Secret Service. Topics covered include its history and the training of its agents, its special agents, and their canine partners. Lowell stresses their mission of protecting U.S. presidents as well as foreign leaders when they visit America but also mentions that the agency deals with crimes involving counterfeit currency. The page design varies, with some double-page spreads featuring a photo on one side facing several lines of relatively simple, large-print text on the other. One spread lists the personal names and drawings of the last seven U.S. presidents with their Secret Service code names. A brief, appreciative, visually dynamic introduction to America’s Secret Service.
