SLJ Review of My Teeth

Beyond the common “how to brush teeth” and “dentist visit” titles on easy reader shelves, these dental titles answer common questions and concerns readers may have about their teeth. The functional aspects of teeth are explained, from how they grow to how they fall out. Some technical imagery is included, such as diagrams of the maxillofa- cial and dental structures, as well as diverse depictions of children with and without their teeth. Loss of teeth and missing teeth are normalized through the photographs. VERDICT This takes seriously the experiences of younger readers’ feelings around their teeth and would make a good addition to classroom shelves.

Booklist Review of All About Teeth

The My Teeth series (4 titles) helps kids get acquainted with their chompers and different activities surrounding them, from going to the dentist to keeping teeth clean and losing baby teeth. This volume examines the tooth itself, providing large, labeled diagrams of the tooth’s four layers (enamel, dentin, cementum, pulp), which support the text’s clear descriptions of these anatomical features. Kids are also walked through the general tooth-growing process, which notes how children have 12 fewer teeth than adults, and the different jobs teeth have to do—it’s not all chewing! Throughout, stock photos of children appear, flashing gaptoothed grins. The book concludes with an activity for kids to make a “Tasty, Toothy Treat” with a caregiver (an apple-slice smile with mini-marshmallow teeth). A toothsome introduction to human dentition.
