CLCD Review of Underwater Construction Workers

Dive deep with this informational book about underwater construction workers. The front cover is sure to draw young readers in with an image of a construction worker using what appears to be a jackhammer underwater. The table of contents outlines four sections, including below the surface, water work, gear close-up, and dive in, be safe. A definition and description of what underwater construction workers do is included in the first section. The water work section has a brief history of underwater equipment, while the gear close-up section identifies modern equipment. The final section explains the importance of underwater construction workers operating in teams for safety and support. A glossary, a check it out section, and an index are also included at the back. The many photographs are engaging but captions do not provide detailed identification of the tools or work. One other challenge is that the Meet an Underwater Construction Worker section does not include a picture of the worker that is described. Overall, this is an educational book that could be used in an elementary school classroom unit about careers or at home for children who love construction work. SLJ Review of Dangerous Jobs

Some of the world’s most dangerous jobs, and the brave people who do them, are highlighted in this hi-lo series. Readers will marvel at the action-packed visuals which showcase the thrilling daily lives of smoke jumpers, fighter pilots, ice road truckers, race car drivers, stunt per- formers, and underwater construction workers. Notable about this series is that it profiles real people working in each job and the challenges and opportunities they face, helping readers put what they learn into context. These books do a great job of integrating relevant details about each career, such as how climate change im- pacts ice road truckers or why there will be fewer stunt performers in the future be- cause of advances in computer technology and special effects, allowing readers to better understand not only these careers but the world around them. VERDICT A versatile hi-lo series that will excite and entertain beginning and early readers.
