Cyberbullying

From the Set Coping

Today's teens spend a significant amount of their social lives online, but the virtual world is not a refuge from bullying and harassment. These tools can provide a helpful sense of connection, but cyberbullies may use them to send their victims threatening texts and cruel emails. Cyberbullies sometimes spread hateful rumors and impersonate their targets to humiliate them. Targets may feel they're never safe online. However, there are strategies that can help teens take action against cyberbullying and resources that help them cope with the psychological consequences. This reassuring title outlines practical steps for addressing cyberbullying and protecting online privacy.

Coping - Booklist

These offerings in the Coping series serve as replacements for Rosen’s 2017 series on helping young adults deal with various physical, mental, and societal challenges. All titles offer balanced information and supply facts, statistics, and case studies to present straightforward definitions, examples, social and cultural considerations, legalities, and potential long-term consequences of conditions left unaddressed. Threads consistent throughout the series include empathy, acceptance, and reassuring exhortations to seek help, whether for personal need or as a concerned upstander. Contact information for helplines and other resources are embedded within text passages and appear in back-matter resource lists. Chapters and subheadings are set off by colorful graphics; full-color photos or sidebars appear on almost every page. Some updated material is obvious. Gender Dysphoria refers to amended language in the American Psychological Association’s definition of gender dysphoria, published in 2022. Opioid Abuse refers to 2021 statistics on fentanyl usage. Racial Inequality considers several contemporary topics, including the uptick in attacks on Asian Americans in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s difficult to pinpoint new material in Stress, but, as with the other offerings, the photos seem fresh and the contact information current. The lack of notes or references limits these titles as research tools, but their important role in getting accurate and reaffirming information and crucial lifelines to teens in crisis cannot be denied.
