Booklist Review of Brilliant Bodies
The Brilliant Bodies series (5 titles) quickly surveys the form and function of individual body parts with an upbeat, affirming tone. Here brows of all colors and shapes arch, quirk, and furrow. The book’s cartoonish design zooms in on photos of people’s faces—young, old, and of various ethnicities—as playful text bubbles offer succinct observations on the valuable roles eyebrows play in people’s everyday lives. In addition to noting how they filter sunlight and buffer sweat and rain, the book points out that eyebrows “help us show how we are feeling.” It also includes a “Brilliant Without” page that features someone whose body can’t grow eyebrows (still brilliant!), making this volume’s single omission its regrettable lack of a unibrow. A final diagram labels other amazing body parts for kids to know.
SLJ Review of Brilliant Bodies
Charming easy readers that utilize areas of the body in focus to teach young readers about themselves in easy to comprehend sections. Bodily differences are addressed, and there is also some social-emotional content embedded in the text for the younger audience. Illustrations take up smaller sections of the page to add context and maintain the readers’ interest with minimal distractions. The authors shine a light on what makes each part of the body brilliant and special for each person. VERDICT A body-positive choice that is perfect for young readers who are curious about them- selves and what lesser-addressed parts of their bodies, like eyebrows, are for.
